Domestic

Asian migrants play an important role to both the economic and social fabric of New Zealand. The typical Asian resident is highly qualified and most likely to be employed. This same migrant group is likely to be in full time employment or own a business. The bottom line is, the data would show on average Asian migrants make a valuable contribution to our communities.

According to data collected in the 2018 census, and by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tourism New Zealand and Education New Zealand there is on average of 240,000 Chinese language speakers in New Zealand at any given time. There are also sizeable Korean and Japanese populations.

Chinese speakers in New Zealand | Residents: 177,000 | Visitors: 610,000 | Students: 39,000

Korean speakers in New Zealand | Residents: 36,000 | Visitors: 93,744 | Students: 7,300

Japanese speakers in New Zealand | Residents: 13,100 | Visitors: 99,800 | Students: 11,00

Vietnamese speakers in New Zealand | Residents: 9,000 | Visitors: 18,600 | Students: 2,410

By engaging with the resident and transient Asian communities in New Zealand, your council will be able to influence their decisions when considering travel destinations, looking for employment or considering where to open a business. The migrant communities, visitors and international students also play an important role as a conduit back to their home countries which, in turn can lead to further tourism, international students and investment.

NOTE: While Covid19 and border restrictions have halted the tourism and export education sectors, there are still substantial numbers of non-native English speakers living in New Zealand. Secondly, with vaccine roll outs happening globally, it is only a matter of time before borders will re-open.

Australia

Australia is one of New Zealand’s most important economic partners. With a history of significant foreign direct investment, Australia is also our largest source of tourists and second largest trading partner. Australia has substantial Asian communities which present a valuable opportunity for New Zealand tourism, e-commerce, investment and skilled migrant attraction.

Globally

China, Japan and Korea make up the 2nd, 3rd and 9th largest global economies. All three markets are hugely important to New Zealand's economy for trade, investment, export education (international students) and tourism.

Malaysia and Singapore, who also communicate in Chinese have strong ties to New Zealand. Singapore is an important strategic partner for New Zealand and one of only two countries where its citizens can buy property in New Zealand without Overseas Investment Office approval.

Vietnam, which currently ranks 37th in the world for the size of the economy is rapidly developing. Vietnam will become an increasingly important player in the Asia-Pacific region over the coming decade.

Introducing

Hongi

Hongi is an exciting news, information and e-commerce portal. Hongi's target audience is the 400,000 strong Asian migrant community and 2 billion Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese speakers globally.

Our nationwide Migrant Perceptions Survey told us that few Councils are truly “Asia Ready.” Migrants have told us that their number one concern is the constant frustration of being unable to access information about living in New Zealand in their own language.

Hongi solves this problem. Your council can communicate with your migrant communities in their own languages. And, your council can showcase your cities, towns and districts to visitors, international students, investors and skilled workers.

For Councils Hongi has three levels:

  • National, providing information of national significance
  • Regional, introducing the regions
  • Local, focusing on specific districts or cities

Each level has news feeds, business directories and community forums.

Also, you’ll find each level has sections for:

  • Tourism
  • Export education
  • Marketing and selling products
  • Community well-being

Hongi’s origins are drawn from Eastern Bridge’s 2018 Asian Migrant’s Perceptions Survey. The nationwide survey received responses from thousands of Asian migrants living in all cities and regions of New Zealand. We identified significant concerns regarding the lack of community information in Asian languages and culture.

Eastern Bridge’s goal is to create a portal for migrants to access quality, trusted news and information about their communities.

Also, we provide your district with global exposure by making Hongi a one-stop shop for products and services from New Zealand businesses.

Hongi supports economic development by

  • promoting your district’s tourism offering and related businesses
  • enticing skilled migrants, international students and business people by showcasing what makes your community unique
  • facilitating exports by promoting local businesses and products on the e-store and through their own Hongi hosted websites
  • welcoming international students by showcasing your local education providers
  • attracting investment and new business by presenting an economic profile of your district

Hongi supports community well-being and welcoming communities by

  • promoting community cohesiveness through multi-lingual discussion boards

Target Market
