Establishing a Footprint in East Asia

In 2018 Eastern Bridge opened its first office in China. Securing a legal entity in China is a complex process with the first step determining what type of entity to choose.

Eastern Bridge decided to work with a local partner and establish a Joint Venture (JV) company. While a JV company involves considerable effort maintaining relationships with the partners, for Eastern Bridge there were more positives than negatives.

The next challenge for Eastern Bridge was deciding where to locate the businesses. Unlike New Zealand, in China certain cities provide benefits to companies establishing there, as a foreign business we were able to secure a number of additional privileges.

Trust in the JV partner has been critical to the office’s success. However, the company did not rely on blind trust. Eastern Bridge contracts an independent Chinese law firm to audit accounts and company documentation.

Eastern Bridge currently has three offices in China.
